When your looking at the whole mountain, it is easy to become overwhelmed. I mean, it's a MOUNTAIN. Just look at it! How will you ever get to the top? That thing is at least 14,000 feet high. This is impossible. I'll just sit on my couch in front of the fireplace and stare at the wall instead. We've all been there and, whether it is a literal or figurative mountain, scaling it can be daunting.
I find slapping myself in the face and yelling "Get it together man!" is sometimes effective. Most days though, I just make a list. What can I do to break this obstacle into thirds or fourths? What is one step I can take. Just one. Stop looking at the whole mountain for a second and just put one foot in front of the other. Today, I will shower and put on pants. Britches always make conquering mountains easier. Then I will take out a bag of trash or do a load of laundry. I will put on some tunes and step for 10 minutes. The power of endorphins and pants will give me the strength to do the next thing and the next. I've never been a big fan of Miley, but now would be the appropriate time to borrow her words, "There's always gonna be another mountain/I'm always gonna wanna make it move/Always gonna be an uphill battle/Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose/Ain't about how fast I get there/Ain't about what's waiting on the other side/It's the climb." |
